Automated Cleaning to Prevent Cross-Contamination

The Clean & Rinse module is embedded in the SMILLA® Frame and provides fully automated cleaning and rinsing of the sample port, tubing, and flow cell after every measurement. The convenient backflush function effectively removes clogging particles without requiring the flow cell to be removed.

To ensure maximum measurement reliability, every Clean & Rinse cycle is automatically followed by a background verification. SMILLA® measures the residual particle concentration within the system and compares it to a user-defined acceptance threshold. The next measurement is started only when the required background cleanliness has been achieved. If the threshold is exceeded, the Clean & Rinse cycle is repeated automatically until the specified cleanliness level is reached. This intelligent quality control minimizes carryover and guarantees reproducible, contamination-free results without user intervention.

The Frame is equipped with multiple sensors to ensure the reliable operation of SMILLA®, both in stand-alone mode and in combination with the SMILLA® Move liquid-handling system.

Its unique modular design also provides maximum flexibility, allowing the HiRes-FIM, LO, and pump modules to be configured and combined according to individual application requirements.

Depending on the application, different flow setups are possible:

SMILLA Frame Module Top Down

Top-Down-Configuration

In top-to-bottom configuration, the sample is introduced to the sample port at the top of the instrument and transported by the pump module through the HiRes-FIM/LO-module to the waste bottle at the bottom of the instrument. It is recommended for all applications with sample volumes of up to approximately 5ml. For the top-to-bottom configuration, automated cleaning including monitoring of background contamination is included.

Bottom-to-Top-Modus

In the bottom-to-top mode, the sample is placed within a beaker on a raiseable stage at the bottom of the instrument. The sample will be transported by the pump module through HiRes-FIM/LO module to the waste bottles at the side of the frame. This configuration is recommended for all applications with large sample volumes and/or samples with quickly sedimenting particles. The raisable stage is also equipped with a magnetic stirrer to provide sample homogenization. For the bottom-to-top configuration, manual cleaning is required.
